CULTURE: Sow in early spring through late summer in a 2" wide band, seeds 1" apart (35 seeds/ft.) for small turnips (half this rate for larger turnips), 1/4- 1/2" deep, rows 12-18" apart.
INSECT PESTS: Floating row covers (see Index) installed on day of sowing will keep turnips free of insect pests, including flea beetles and root maggots.
HARVEST: Young, radish-size turnips in about 30 days, full size in 40-50 days. Roots are smoothest when small.
STORAGE: Turnips with greens store at 32F (0C) and 95% humidity for 10-14 days.
AVG. DIRECT SEEDING RATE: 320'/oz., 3.1 oz./1,000', 5 2/3 lb./acre at 35 seeds/ft. in rows 18" apart.

THE BENEFITS OF TURNIPS

Turnips are root vegetable which is about the size of a small apple, with a firm white skin that has a blush of purple on the shoulders. Turnip roots weigh up to about 1 kilogram, although they can be harvested when smaller. The small turnips also called baby turnips is a preferred variety. Most baby turnips can be eaten whole, including their leaves. Baby turnips come in yellow, orange, and red-fleshed varieties as well as white-fleshed. It has a mild flavor so they are eaten raw in salads. Turnip leaves also called "turnip greens" is equally nutrition, it has a pungent flavor similar to mustard leaves that becomes mild after cooking.
